The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off today, bringing together the world’s best football nations in what is being described as the biggest World Cup tournament in history.
Hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the tournament features a record 48 national teams competing in 104 matches over the next six weeks. It is the first World Cup to be jointly hosted by three countries and the first to expand from 32 to 48 teams.
The opening matches today will see Mexico take on South Africa while South Korea faces the Czech Republic. The United States will begin its campaign against Paraguay on Friday night.
Although Belize did not qualify for the tournament, thousands of Belizean football fans are expected to follow the action closely. Football remains one of the country’s most popular sports, and World Cup matches traditionally bring families and friends together in homes, restaurants, sports bars, and workplaces across Belize.
Many Belizeans are expected to support regional neighbor Mexico, while others will be backing traditional football powers such as Brazil, Argentina, England, France, Germany, Spain, and Portugal.
The tournament will feature some of the biggest stars in world football, including Argentina’s Lionel Messi, France’s Kylian Mbappé, and Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who many experts believe could become one of the breakout stars of the competition.
This year’s World Cup will also make history with four nations appearing for the first time ever: Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan.
The group stage runs through June 27 before the tournament enters the knockout rounds, culminating with the World Cup Final on July 19.
