U.S. sanctions Cuba’s state energy company as tensions with Havana deepen

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The United States has announced new sanctions against Cuba’s state-owned energy company, Unión Cuba-Petróleo (CUPET), in the latest move by the Trump administration to increase economic pressure on the island nation.

The announcement was made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who said the sanctions were imposed under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump.

According to Rubio, the Cuban government has allegedly used its control over fuel supplies as a mechanism of political and social control while ordinary citizens continue to face fuel shortages and frequent blackouts.

In a statement released by the U.S. Department of State, Rubio accused Cuba’s ruling elite of benefiting from the country’s energy resources while many Cubans struggle with deteriorating living conditions.

The sanctions target CUPET, which is responsible for Cuba’s oil imports, fuel distribution, and energy operations.

The latest action comes as Cuba continues to battle one of the worst economic and energy crises in decades. Residents across the island have endured repeated power outages, fuel shortages, and disruptions to transportation and essential services.

For Belize, developments in Cuba remain important because of the longstanding diplomatic relationship between the two countries. Belize has historically maintained strong ties with Cuba, particularly in healthcare, education, and technical cooperation.

While Belize and the United States remain close partners, Belize has consistently supported engagement with Cuba and has repeatedly called for the easing of restrictions against the island.

The new sanctions are expected to further increase tensions between Washington and Havana as the Trump administration continues its tougher approach toward Cuba.
