By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 60-year-old woman from Sandhill, Jennifer Victoria Anthony, was fined in court on Tuesday after being found intoxicated in public over the weekend. During the incident she was rushed to the hospital with high blood pressure while in police custody.

On Sunday, November 3, Anthony was discovered by police sitting in front of Paul’s Supermarket parking lot at Mile 19 in Sandhill Village, allegedly intoxicated. The responding officer on the scene reported noticing a strong smell of alcohol as Anthony struggled to walk. She was subsequently detained and taken to the Racoon Street Police Station. However, during her time in custody, Anthony’s blood pressure spiked, prompting officers to transport her to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) for urgent treatment.

During her court appearance, Anthony admitted guilt, explaining to the Magistrate that she felt targeted by a particular police officer who had repeatedly arrested her. She claimed she was only at the location to “hustle,” though someone had left her with drinks. Despite her defense, Anthony admitted to drinking and acknowledged she was intoxicated.

This was Anthony’s second conviction for public drunkenness within recent weeks. She had not yet paid her previous fine and was fined again today—$25 with an additional $5 court cost. She has until December 31, 2024, to pay the recent fine, with a one-week imprisonment penalty if left unpaid.

The Magistrate warned Anthony that repeated convictions could lead to jail time, as happened to another individual with multiple public drunkenness offenses. As of her court appearance, Anthony remains on medication to manage her high blood pressure.
