By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): It sounds like something straight out of a Belizean folk tale, but it played out on the world stage at the World Cup. A Ghanaian witch doctor says he placed a curse on England captain Harry Kane to stop him from scoring against Ghana, and judging by what happened on the field, plenty of football fans are wondering if there might be something to it.
The man behind the claim is Nana Kwaku Bonsam, a self-described spiritualist from Ghana whose name reportedly translates as “Devil of Wednesday.” In the days before the match, Bonsam boasted that he was “working on” Kane, vowing to do just enough to stop the striker from hurting his country, without wishing him any serious harm.
Then came the game. England and Ghana played to a goalless draw, and Kane, one of the deadliest finishers in world football, somehow wasted a golden late chance that could have won it. For a player of his quality, the miss was so out of character that it had people talking.
Never one to miss a moment, Bonsam quickly posted a video declaring victory and then “releasing” Kane from the hex. “I am the most powerful spiritualist in the whole world,” he said while performing what appeared to be a ritual. “Now, I am going to release Harry Kane so that, in his next match, he can score.” He even sent a friendly message to the England captain, telling him, “Harry, I will come and visit you. Don’t be offended. We are friends.”
This is not the first time Bonsam has claimed such powers. Back in 2014, he said he was behind a knee injury to Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo when Ghana and Portugal met at the World Cup. His latest claim even drew a response from celebrity illusionist Uri Geller, who vowed to “cancel” the curse by sending his own positive energy Kane’s way.
For many Belizeans, a story like this will not seem far fetched at all. In a country where belief in obeah, brujería and the power of the spiritual world runs deep, the idea that someone could put “work” on a person, or take it off, is something a lot of people take very seriously. From the bush doctors of old to the whispered warnings about crossing the wrong person, the supernatural has always had a place in Belizean life.
So, was Harry Kane really cursed, or did he simply have an off night? England fans will be hoping the so-called release works, with the team facing Panama in their final group game. But here in Belize, more than a few people will tell you not to dismiss the power of a good curse too quickly. What do you think? Comment below.
