“We can’t be living one way and the people another”: Cordel Hyde calls for cuts to ministers’ allowances

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Acting Prime Minister Cordel Hyde says government ministers need to look at reducing their own allowances as Belizeans struggle with the cost of living.

Hyde is serving as acting Prime Minister and Minister of Finance while Prime Minister John Briceño attends the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Speaking to 7 News after delivering the keynote address at a Central Bank event, Hyde said the conversation on cost of living has to intensify into action.

“I think we as a government have to tighten our own belts, have to make some sacrifices, have to look at our own allowances too, because we can’t be living one way and have the people live in another way,” he said.

He pointed to the bus transportation subsidy as a positive step but said more is needed.

“We have to do more. We have to be activists.”

Hyde was direct about the political risk of inaction.

“If we don’t do anything, then it will only allow people to continue to say that we are disconnected and we’re out of touch. And we don’t want that stain to be on us.”

“I think we have to really, really put some dent in our allowances to show people that we are living in the same space.”
