By Zoila Palma: As Belize heads into the general elections on March 12, 2025, the United Democratic Party (UDP) is outlining a bold vision for the country’s future, aiming to address what they call the failed policies and mismanagement of the current PUP administration.
Under the leadership of Shyne Barrow, the UDP is pledging a transformative changes in key sectors such as governance, education, and economy.
In their 2025 manifesto, Barrow emphasized the importance of the upcoming election, stating, “On March 12th, 2025, we have an opportunity to make our voices heard and take action against the failed policies and mismanagement of the current government. Under their leadership, our national debt has skyrocketed, and our economy continues to falter, leaving Belizeans struggling. The current administration’s inability to manage our resources has put the wellbeing of our people at risk. This election is our chance to reclaim Belize’s prosperity.
As the leader of the United Democratic Party, I offer new vision and dynamic leadership for our beloved country. My team and I stand prepared to steer Belize in a new direction. One that prioritizes the welfare of our citizens and ensures responsible economic management.”
Among the pledges by the UDP is to increase the digitization of government services across all ministries. This will not only improve efficiency but also make doing business in Belize easier for citizens. The implementation of e-Governance will modernize public service, streamline processes, and reduce the bureaucratic burden on the people and to fully fund the University of Belize to provide free tertiary education for all Belizeans.
In addition, the UDP pledges a 10% increase in the salaries of teachers to ensure that educators are properly compensated for their hard work and restoring frozen teacher increments and providing an annual uniform and classroom beautification grant to teachers.
The UDP also pledges to digitize processes related to appraisals, increments, and pensions to make the system more efficient.
Barrow’s promises highlight his administration’s focus on education as a cornerstone for Belize’s future.
