By Zoila Palma: Sandra Ferguson, a dedicated advocate for small farmer empowerment in Grenada, has been honored as a Leader of Rurality of the Americas by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
With over 30 years of service, Ferguson has made significant strides in providing Grenadian small farmers with access to credit, technical support, and training.
Ferguson will receive IICA’s “Soul of Rurality” award, recognizing individuals who have made a meaningful impact on rural communities. Her work has been vital in addressing food security challenges in the Caribbean, where food imports are high, and local agricultural production is key to sustainability.
Joining the Agency for Rural Transformation (ART) in 1992, Ferguson helped empower rural communities, especially women, youth, and family farmers.
She is a strong proponent of local food production, leading campaigns such as “Grow What You Eat and Eat What You Grow,” to encourage healthier and more sustainable diets.
Through her efforts, Ferguson has also been instrumental in providing loans to small businesses and revitalizing Grenada’s beekeeping sector, which has gained international recognition. Notably, in 1997, she coordinated Grenada’s participation in the International Honey Show in Great Britain, where the island received several prestigious awards.
Ferguson believes in the importance of understanding the unique challenges faced by farmers, particularly in the context of climate change.
She stresses the need for empowering small farmers, as they are essential to ensuring food sovereignty in the Caribbean and beyond.
“Without small farmers, we cannot have healthy food,” Ferguson concludes, highlighting the vital role they play in the region’s sustainability.
