Why was young Jane Urbina from Santa Elena and her unborn child senselessly murdered

By Hugh O’Brien: Jane Urbina, an energetic young woman hailing from Santa Elena, Cayo, is the latest murder victim in Belize’s senseless and growing murder count. She was pregnant, soon expecting a bouncing baby, but sadly the baby did not survive the ordeal. While statistics may not classify the death of the unborn baby as murder, in the minds of family and friends, today’s incident was a double murder.

On Saturday, the day before Father’s Day, Urbina went down to the Belize Central Prison to visit her 21, or 22-year-old brother, Lionel Rodolfo Urbina, a Police Constable who is on remand for the stabbing death of another young man, 19-year-old Kevin Matthew Depaz, which occurred in Caye Caulker on June 30th, 2025. After visiting her brother, she waited in Hattieville for the bus to travel back home to Santa Elena, when she was reportedly targeted and shot by a man riding a motorcycle. The man pointed the gun and had the guts to mercilessly shoot and kill a defenseless pregnant woman and a defenseless unborn child.

Why would someone want to kill a young innocent pregnant woman? And how did they get information that this young woman went to prison on this said day and time to visit her brother? Or was Jane Urbina just a victim of a man who just decided to kill someone today for no reason? These are questions the police will have to investigate and seek answers to. They will need to also investigate whether or not information about these prison visits is not being leaked from individuals, including prisoners and possible prison wardens, from within the prison itself.

Social media and news outlets, including Breaking Belize News, have already begun to be flooded with the suspicion that the murder of Jane Urbina is related to the stabbing death of Kevin Depaz in Caye Caulker last year. This incident itself was senseless and caused the death of a 19-year-old man, himself who was only visiting and had a whole future ahead of him. In fact, all five (5) of the individuals involved in the Caye Caulker incident, including PC Urbina and the other Police Constable, as well as Depaz and his two (2) friends were either in their late teens or early twenties.

One of the comments under Breaking Belize News earlier report highlighted a possible connection between the June 2025 incident and Jane Urbina’s murder “This lady didn’t harm anyone..she paid the price for what her brother did!! This is beyond cold hearted”. This is not the way for us to lose our young people, to lose our talents, our future.

Is this a revenge killing that has the makes of ‘if you can’t catch Harry you catch his shirt’. What is driving this extent of violence and revenge murders in Belize? Is it that our people are losing faith in the justice system? Should we begin to have more faith, and invest more, in our justice system in light of the recent guilty verdict and 50-year prison sentence for Elmer Nah for the triple murder of the Ramnarace family?
