Tyla’s win with hit song ‘Water’ over Burna Boy, Davido at Grammys 2024 ignites South Africa-Nigeria football rivalry ahead of African Cup semifinals

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: South African singer Tyla’s winning a Grammy on Monday for her hit song Water over four Nigerian nominees, including Burna Boy, Davido, and Ayra Starr, has ignited the South-African football rivalry ahead of their African Nations Cup (Afcon) semifinal match on Wednesday.

While many have simply congratulated Tyla for winning the Grammy for the Best African Music Performance – an award introduced this year – some couldn’t hold back their nationality sentiments ahead of Wednesday’s football match in Ivory Coast.

Nigerians who have shown superiority in African football have called on their Men’s National Team to avenge them at the African Nations Cup for losing out to the South African singer at the Grammys, according to a BBC report.

“South Africa won today but Nigeria will win on Wednesday where it matters most” posted a X user, the BBC reported.

“No Nigerian won a Grammy, but a South African won. This is Nigerians being generous so that when we win them in AFCON, they will have something to banter with,” another user said on X.

Tyla was overwhelmed at winning a Grammy at such a young age.

“This is crazy! I never thought I’d say I won a Grammy at 22 years old!” Tyla said in winning the prized award.

South Africans were expecting Nigerian Afrobeats giant Burna Boy, who made a great performance at the Grammys, to win but despite being nominated in four categories, he came up empty.

Showing no bitterness, Davido, who is a three-time Grammy nominee, congratulated Tyla telling her to “keep soaring”.

Tyla’s song ‘Water’ has become so popular that it’s being played, and danced to, by numerous cultures all over the world. The Tyla’s dance challenge using the song has taken over Tik Tok like a storm.
