By Zoila Palma: The 21st Belize-Mexico Border Commanders Conference (21st BCM) concluded successfully in Belize City, marking a significant milestone in bilateral defence architecture.
The event was officially opened following a powerful keynote address from Florencio Marin Jr., Minister of National Defence and Border Security.
Minister Marin highlighted the deep-rooted 45-year diplomatic alliance between the two nations, noting that Mexico was the first country to recognize Belize’s independence in 1981. He issued a candid call to action against sophisticated Transnational Criminal Organizations and drug cartels targeting shared river networks, dense jungles, and maritime corridors.
“Standing isolated against such a threat is not an option… To defeat a networked adversary, we must operate as an interconnected, seamless network,” Marin said.
The Conference included high-level defence delegations from the Belize Defence Force and the Belize Coast Guard, alongside representatives from Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defence (DEFENSA) and Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR). Convened to strengthen operational cooperation along the shared border, the Conference was chaired by Brigadier General Anthony Velasquez, Commander of the Belize Defence Force.
Division General José Francisco Terán Valle of the Mexican Army’s Yucatán Peninsula Command and Vice Admiral Marco Antonio Muñoz Hernández of SEMAR’s 11th Naval Zone led the Mexican delegation. The Conference established key bilateral protocols spanning land, maritime, air, and intelligence domains.
