Two dead; 2 more injured in violent weekend shootings in Belize City

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belize City recorded a violent weekend with multiple shootings across the city that left 2 men dead and 2 more injured.

Just before 5pm on Friday, March 22, 2024, notorious gang figure Elwin Lewis was reportedly riding his motorcycle on Antelope Street when another motorcycle pulled up and fired several shots killing him.

Reports say that Lewis was a prominent member of the George Street Gangs but had turned his life around. Police are still investigating.

Just a few hours later around 11 on Friday night, a well-known taxi operator was ambushed and killed at the corner of St Joseph and St Thomas Streets.

Authorities found the lifeless body of Nigel Williams inside his Toyota 4runner after residents heard several shots rang out.

At this time, authorities believe that Williams was attacked by someone who knew his routine.

As police continue to investigate both murders on Friday, they responded to another shooting on Freedom Street in Belize City.

Just before 7 pm on Sunday night, Ashton Myers was sitting in front of his yard when a vehicle emerged and a person came out and fired several shots towards him.

Myers was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

Police were called to another shooting on Sunday night in the Jane Usher area of Belize City.

According to reports, Fredrick Garbutt, 21, was shot by a man who reportedly exited a black SUV. Garbutt was taken for medical treatment as investigations continue.

Residents are concerned following the recent spike in gun violence in Belize City.
