By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): US President Donald Trump is insisting the midterm losses were not about him.
As results came in on Tuesday night showing Democrats taking control of the US Senate, Trump posted on social media: “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
The post came about 24 hours after Trump had repeatedly urged voters to “pretend I’m on the ballot” while campaigning for Republican candidates in mostly conservative states.
Voters appeared to take him at his word. Democrats flipped Republican held Senate seats in North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa, Texas, South Carolina and Kansas, all states Trump carried in 2024, and in several of them he had personally picked or campaigned for the losing candidates.
Trump has since said Democrats “did a good job” in their campaigns and blamed Republican candidates for the defeats. He also singled out Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who lost his race, calling him a “RINO,” or Republican in name only.
An AP Voter Poll found about two thirds of voters believe Trump’s policies have made the US economy worse, with high prices tied to the Iran war and tariffs among their top concerns.
