By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): American voters handed Democrats control of the US Senate on Tuesday, a major rebuke to President Donald Trump driven largely by frustration over rising costs linked to his war on Iran and his tariff policies.
Democrats flipped Republican held seats in North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa, Texas, South Carolina and Kansas, all states Trump won in 2024. In several of them, Trump had personally chosen the Republican candidates or campaigned for them. Democrats also held on to a key seat in Georgia and defeated Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
Trump had urged voters to “pretend I’m on the ballot.” After the results, he said Democrats “did a good job” and blamed Republican candidates for the losses.
For Belize, the outcome matters. The Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have pushed fuel prices sharply higher across the region. BEL says the diesel it buys has nearly doubled from about $6 to close to $12 a gallon this year, and the utility has asked the PUC to double the COPA cap on electricity bills.
A Democratic Senate will have greater power to investigate the Trump administration and block his nominations. Analysts say that could put more pressure on the White House over the war and its economic fallout, including the high fuel prices that have rippled into Belizean homes and businesses.
