By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Opposition is doubling down on its demand for Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado to step aside.
Opposition Leader Tracy Panton has renewed her call for his removal, this time as police use emergency powers under the state of emergency in Southside Belize City and parts of the Belize and Cayo Districts.
Panton said the UDP wants accountable leadership at the top of the force and accused the Commissioner of falling short on several fronts.
Among her concerns are low morale within the department, alleged conflicts of interest involving his office and the political directorate, detentions she described as seemingly illegal and unconstitutional, and a failure to hold rogue officers accountable.
She also said Rosado has not earned the trust and respect of marginalized communities.
“The UDP calls for the immediate removal of the current police commissioner, Dr. Richard Rosado, as a first step to bolstering the public trust and confidence in effective policing. Dr. Richard Rosado must go and he must go now,” Panton said.
It is the second time in days that Panton has called for Rosado’s exit. Neither the Commissioner nor the Ministry of National Security has publicly responded.
