By Zoila Palma:  Total domestic exports for August 2025 reached $26.1 million, a 40.3% decline compared to $43.8 million in August 2024, according to data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

The steep fall reflects challenges across several major export categories, with sugar accounting for the largest share of the decline.

Sugar revenues plunged $15.8 million, from $22.2 million last year to $6.5 million, driven by timing differences in shipments and lower export volumes.

Other commodities also experienced decreases, including alcoholic beverages and sawn wood (both down about $1.2 million), bananas (down $0.9 million to $6 million), and citrus (down $0.4 million to $2.8 million).

The only significant increase came from marine products, which rose $1.3 million to $5.7 million, largely due to higher lobster meat sales.
