Prime Minister says ‘Budna abduction matter’ is for Julius and DPP

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says questions about the Joseph Budna case should be directed to interim Minister of Home Affairs Julius Espat, adding that the matter is already outside the direct control of police if it is before the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Briceño was asked whether Espat’s shake-up of the cyberbullying case against Alberto August should also lead to movement in the Budna matter. He responded that he does not know exactly what is in the police file, but understands that the matter is in the hands of the DPP.

The Budna case has been one of the most controversial policing matters in recent years. Budna alleged he was abducted from Orange Walk and ended up in Guatemalan custody. Cabinet later approved an independent investigation into the alleged abduction that yielded a case file, which the DPP said contained very little.

In April, Home Affairs CEO Elton Bennett acknowledged that a crime had occurred, saying, “Someone was abducted. That’s a crime.” At that time, he said the DPP had reviewed the file and sent it back to police for additional answers.

The DPP previously said a crime had been committed, but that investigators still had to establish who was involved and why.
