Single mother says income tax bill drained children’s education fund, highlights strain on working moms

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belizean single mother says years of savings intended for her children’s education have been wiped out after she was assessed for income tax by the Belize Tax Service Department.

In an interview with Breaking Belize News, the mother explained that she was required to pay nearly $8,000 in income tax, along with additional interest charges on the outstanding amount.

The unexpected liability, she said, forced her to draw down the entire fund she had built over years to support her three children through high school and university.

“I’ve been saving from the time I started working to make sure my children would have opportunities I didn’t,” she said. “Now that fund is gone.”

She described the situation as a setback not only financially but emotionally, noting that the savings represented long-term planning and sacrifice. The added burden of interest on the assessed taxes, she said, further compounded her challenges.

The mother framed her experience within broader struggles faced by single working parents, particularly women. She pointed to rising living costs—including fuel, school expenses, and household bills—as factors placing increasing pressure on already stretched incomes.

“This is the reality for many single mothers,” she said. “We carry the full responsibility of providing—housing, food, and education—while trying to maintain stable employment.”

Her comments also raise questions about whether existing policies adequately account for the financial realities of single-income households.

She argued that limited targeted support leaves many women at a disadvantage, especially those balancing caregiving responsibilities with full-time work.

The mother is now urging consideration for single-parent households in national policy discussions, particularly in areas related to taxation and cost-of-living relief.
