By Horace Palacio: Opposition Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow has strongly criticized the appointment of Maria Rodriquez as Belize’s new Auditor General, questioning her qualifications and alleging irregularities in her career advancement.
During a heated 45-minute speech in the House of Representatives on Friday, Barrow claimed that the university from which Rodriquez says she earned her master’s degree does not offer an online business administration course and does not accept students from Belize. He also pointed to what he described as “illegal promotions” in her past, arguing that these call into question her suitability for the critical oversight role.
“If something starts wrong, it continues wrong, and it will only end wrong,” Barrow declared, arguing that the People’s United Party (PUP) government had failed to reform the Auditor General’s Office as promised in its manifesto. He further accused the administration of installing a political ally instead of selecting a qualified and independent candidate.
His statements, however, were quickly challenged by Corozal South East Area Representative Florencio Marin, who refuted Barrow’s claim that Rodriquez was a relative of his and defended her background. “That is incorrect information, like the rest of your speech,” Marin fired back, calling on Barrow to “scratch that off the record.”
The appointment of the Auditor General has been a long-standing issue, with Belize lacking a fully functioning oversight office for the past four years. While Barrow remains vocal in his opposition, the government insists that Rodriquez is the right candidate for the job.
