By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says reports that the Belize Defence Force purchased boots at a significant markup are troubling and raise questions that must be answered.
Briceño was asked about information showing that the BDF allegedly bought at least 1,500 pairs of boots at a higher price than what may have been available locally. The Prime Minister said he had not seen the full file and was relying on what the media had reported, but added that the matter “gets you upset” and is not something he would support.
7News Belize reported that the Ministry of Defence paid around $400 per pair for boots that one local importer said had previously been supplied to Government for about $275. The report said that for 1,500 pairs, the difference could amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Briceño was also asked about a letter reportedly sent by a vendor who said he could have supplied the boots cheaper. The Prime Minister said he did not remember seeing the letter, but said such correspondence would normally be sent to the relevant ministry for action.
