By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Premier League of Belize champions Port Layola drew 1-1 with Guatemala First Division League’s Deportivo San Benito from the neighbouring Guatemalan Department of Petén at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan on Saturday, July 20.
Hugo del Cid put San Benito ahead 1-0 but Gilroy ‘Bredda’ Thurton levelled at 1-1 in the first half. San Benito played more that half of the match with ten men as their central defender was red carded in the first half.
San Benito had beaten Verdes 3-1 on Wednesday in Benque Viejo del Carmen while Port defeated Guatemala Second Division League club CSD Sayaxché 4-0 at the FFB Stadium that same day.
Port wanted to play San Benito because they figured the Peten club would a good measuring stick considering they were recently defeated 5-2 by Port’s first Central American Cup opponents, Antigua GFC.
Port play Antigua on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at 4:00 pm at the FFB Stadium.
