By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 46-year-old police constable from Belize City’s Northside was arraigned and remanded to the Belize Central Prison on Wednesday after being formally charged with incest involving his 14-year-old niece. Notably, he was charged with incest and not rape despite his niece claiming that he raped her.
The officer appeared shortly after 9:30 a.m. in Court #6 before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison, accompanied by attorney Oscar Selgado. Because incest is an indictable offense that must be tried in the High Court, no plea was taken during the arraignment.
Police allege that the incident occurred on Friday, March 27, when the minor told investigators that her uncle, who is her mother’s brother, sexually assaulted her at around 10:00 p.m. The matter came to light on Sunday, March 29, after police responded to a report of the alleged assault at a Northside residence, where officers found family members in an altercation with the accused.
The 14-year-old, an American student, was later interviewed in the presence of her mother and a social worker. She was subsequently taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for a medical examination as part of the investigation.
Following inquiries by Northside Crimes Investigation Branch personnel, the police constable was detained and later charged with incest. Investigators said he declined to give an audio or video recorded statement in the presence of a Justice of the Peace.
Due to the serious nature of the allegation, bail was denied in the Magistrate’s Court, and the officer was remanded until May 28, 2026, when disclosure is expected to be served.
Attorney Oscar Selgado indicated that he is preparing a High Court bail application on behalf of his client.
