By Aaron Humes: In a rare public smackdown, the People’s United Party’s Secretariat has issued a warning to Corozal Bay area representative Elvia Vega-Samos “to cease immediately from making further baseless and outlandish public statements, knowing fully well that there is not an iota of evidence to validate such allegations.”
The allegations refer generally to the Party’s conduct of last Sunday’s Standard Bearer Convention held in Corozal Bay in which Vega-Samos was defeated by Thea Garcia Ramirez by 700 votes.
Vega-Samos issued a statement on Friday on social media making allegations of lack of protection of her position by the Party and efforts to weight the Convention in favour of Garcia-Ramirez, including bringing in ineligible voters.
The party issued a four point response as follows: 1) The decision to conduct a contested Convention in Corozal Bay was that of the Party’s National Executive Committee; 2) The procedure for the finalization of the Voter’s List for the Convention was done with the FULL participation of both Candidates and their representatives, ensuring a process that was open and fair; 3) both Candidates and their representatives signed off on the final list and that was the list that was used on convention day; and 4) ONLY registered voters of the Corozal Bay constituency were allowed to vote. As with other Conventions that the Party conducted in the past, there was absolutely no deviation from that process.
The Party said it continues to work with and support Vega-Samos as she completes her term of service to the people of Corozal Bay and confidently maintains that unity will prevail and that all Party supporters will rally behind the new Standard Bearer who was elected last Sunday.
