Police minister Kareem Musa says greater emphasis to be placed on officers’ mental health in wake of officer’s suicide

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa says that the recent suicide of a police officer in the Corozal district has prompted the Ministry to take a closer look at officers’ mental health.

Speaking at the Computer Performance Statistics (COMPSTAT) conference held in Belmopan on Wednesday, Musa said that the welfare of police officers is an issue that he takes personally, as all crime fighting efforts rely on police officers being well enough to do their jobs. Musa said that the ministry will be striving for

“At the end of the day, they are all human beings and we often times forget that they are human beings and they suffer the same types of issues that we all do in terms of physical ailments, in terms of stress….And so that is going to be a particular focus for our ministry in the upcoming budget…,” Musa said.

Twenty-seven-year-old Police Constable Irvin Chan reportedly committed suicide with his firearm while inside the Sarteneja Police Station just after 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says that counselling services are being made available to the officers that worked with him who may have been impacted by his death.
