PM says controversial Guatemala billboards appear to be tourism campaign: ‘We would never be part of Guatemala’

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says controversial Guatemalan billboards seen by Belizeans appear to be intended as tourism advertisements rather than a political statement about Guatemala’s territorial claim.

Asked about the advertisements following his State of the Nation Address, Briceño acknowledged that the wording could be interpreted as misleading but said he has been informed that the campaign is intended to encourage Belizeans to visit Guatemala.

Briceño suggested the advertisers could consider changing the wording to remove any perception that the signs imply Belize belongs to Guatemala.

The Prime Minister made it clear, however, that there should be no ambiguity about Belize’s position on sovereignty.

“We would never be a part of Guatemala,” Briceño said.

His comments come amid heightened sensitivity over Belize-Guatemala relations following the September 10 confrontation at the Sarstoon, where Guatemalan military and civilian vessels prevented the Belize Territorial Volunteers from completing their annual trip around Sarstoon Island.
