PM Briceño says Alexis Rosado resigned voluntarily after becoming a distraction, disagrees with House Speaker Valerie Woods

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says Ambassador Alexis Rosado made his own decision to resign as Belize’s Co-Agent before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), acknowledging that his continued involvement in the country’s legal proceedings had become a distraction.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Briceño was asked whether he had personally urged Rosado to step down.

“I think it’s a decision that he made on his part,” Briceño said, adding that Rosado apparently recognized he was becoming a distraction from the work of the legal team.

“I want to thank him for making the decision,” the Prime Minister added.

Rosado’s resignation was confirmed by the Government of Belize on October 26, following mounting public pressure over his continued representation of Belize while facing serious criminal charges involving allegations of sexual offences.

The Prime Minister was also questioned about House Speaker Valerie Woods’ extraordinary public statement, in which she challenged the government’s decision to retain Rosado and raised concerns about the message being sent to victims of sexual violence.

Briceño said he disagreed with several points raised by Woods, suggesting that she was not correct in many instances. However, he declined to elaborate, saying he did not want to engage in a public dispute with the Speaker.

Asked whether Woods should have made her concerns public rather than addressing them privately, Briceño said that was her decision.

The Prime Minister had previously defended Rosado’s continued involvement in Belize’s ICJ proceedings, arguing that removing the experienced diplomat would not have been in the country’s best interests.

When asked whether Rosado’s departure would affect Belize’s preparations for the ICJ proceedings, Briceño said that was a question better answered by the technical members of the legal team.

Rosado’s criminal proceedings remain unresolved.
