By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): There was plenty to celebrate for Belize cricket, as the national side claimed their first victory of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Sub-Regional Qualifier, and saw one of their batsmen rewrite the record books in the process.
Belize defeated Brazil by eight wickets, a comfortable win sealed with 13 balls to spare. At the heart of the result was an outstanding performance from Alexander Oxley, who struck an unbeaten 80 from 63 deliveries. The knock was the highest individual score ever made by a Belizean in T20 Internationals, surpassing the previous best of 70 set by Lawrence Bonner against Panama in December 2024.
The win was a true team effort. Captain Maurice Castillo led from the front with the ball, picking up three wickets for 16 runs to help restrict Brazil to 133 for nine. Brazil’s innings had been anchored by vice-captain Luiz Muller, who made 46 from 36 balls. In reply, Castillo then chipped in with the bat, finishing 29 not out alongside Oxley to guide Belize home.
The result marked a strong response from Belize, who had earlier suffered a heavy ten-wicket defeat to Bermuda. Bouncing back with a record-breaking display will be a major boost to the team’s confidence as the tournament continues.
The qualifier features five teams, Belize, Bermuda, Panama, Brazil and the Bahamas, with only one side set to progress to the next stage. The eventual winners will move on to join the Cayman Islands, Canada and the United States in the next round.
At the top of the table, Panama and Bermuda have been setting the pace, with the two sides meeting in a key top-of-table clash. For Belize, the focus will be on building on the momentum of their breakthrough win as they look to climb the standings.
