By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Former United Democratic Party Chairman Alberto August has been arrested today under Belize’s Cybercrime Act following a social media post he shared earlier this week containing remarks allegedly made by Minister of Home Affairs Oscar Mira regarding the murder of Dr Naum Bonilla.
The arrest comes days after Minister Mira issued a forceful public statement categorically denying the remarks attributed to him in August’s post and vowing to pursue every legal option available to hold August accountable.
According to Mira the statements shared by August were entirely fabricated and were placed inside quotation marks and presented to the Belizean public as fact. He described the post as a shameful attempt to exploit the tragic murder of Dr Bonilla and called August’s conduct past disgusting.
A police report was subsequently filed. Today August was taken into custody.
The arrest marks one of the most significant uses of Belize’s Cybercrime Act against a prominent political figure and is certain to ignite a national debate about the boundaries of free speech, political commentary and accountability on social media.
August has not yet issued a public response to the arrest at the time of this report.
