Will Belize’s Logging moratorium shut down Lumber yards and put thousands out of work?

By Zoila Palma:  Belize’s five-year moratorium on the issuance of Short-Term Forest Licences and Petty Permits, introduced on December 1, 2025, was designed to protect the country’s forests from depletion and unsustainable harvesting.

Government officials said the measure became necessary due to mounting evidence of declining forest stocks.

The policy, approved by Cabinet, places a halt on permits for tree cutting on national lands while applications on leased lands face stricter scrutiny.

While conservationists have welcomed stronger forest protections, growing concerns are emerging from those whose livelihoods depend on timber.

Lumber yard operators, cabinet shop owners, furniture makers, builders and logging families are increasingly asking what the moratorium means for their future. Hardwood supplies are reportedly becoming harder to source, and businesses say certain lumber sizes are no longer readily available.

Lumber yards are already struggling to meet customer demand, with some businesses forced to turn away orders as hardwood scarcity grows during what is normally a productive season.

The concerns raise broader economic questions.

If lumber yards cannot source materials and builders cannot obtain wood, what becomes of cabinet makers and construction businesses that rely on steady timber supplies? For many small enterprises, reduced inventory may eventually lead to downsizing or layoffs. Behind every workshop, lumber yard or logging operation are employees and families whose income depends on continued business activity.

Government cannot focus solely on conservation without also addressing how affected industries will survive during the five-year period.

The question now facing Belize is whether a middle ground can be found between environmental protection and economic survival.

As hardwood supplies tighten and businesses feel increasing pressure, many within the timber sector are asking whether sustainable forestry policies can also include practical solutions for the industries and workers who have long depended on logging and lumber as economic drivers.
