Business is hard, marriage is hard, life is hard: choose your hard

By Horace Palacio:

Life is hard.

That is one of the few truths that applies to everyone, whether you are rich or poor, young or old, living in Belize City or Punta Gorda.

Running a business is hard. Being married is hard. Raising children in today’s world is hard. Building a career is hard. Saving money is hard. Starting over after failure is hard. Life will demand something from you regardless of who you are.

The problem is that many people spend too much time criticizing those who are in the arena instead of stepping into the arena themselves.

It is easy to criticize a business owner.

What many people do not see are the sleepless nights, the payroll worries, the rising fuel costs, the taxes, the customs delays, the employee challenges, and the constant pressure of keeping the doors open. Every successful business in Belize carries burdens that most people never see.

It is easy to criticize politicians.

Yet whether you support the PUP or the UDP, leadership comes with enormous pressure. Every decision affects thousands of lives. Every mistake is magnified. Every success is often ignored. The people on the sidelines rarely understand the weight carried by those making difficult decisions.

It is easy to criticize parents.

But raising children today may be harder than at any point in history. Parents are competing against social media, smartphones, negative influences, drugs, gangs, and a culture that constantly pulls young people in different directions. There is no perfect manual for raising children.

It is easy to criticize those who take risks.

Belizeans often complain that there are not enough entrepreneurs, innovators, investors, or leaders. Yet when someone actually takes a risk, many people immediately begin attacking them. We celebrate success in theory but often resent it when we see it up close.

That mindset hurts Belize.

A country grows when more people step into the arena. More entrepreneurs. More builders. More creators. More investors. More community leaders. More people willing to try, fail, learn, and try again.

Theodore Roosevelt once spoke about “the man in the arena.” His point was simple. The credit belongs to the person who actually steps forward and dares greatly, not the person sitting safely on the sidelines offering endless criticism.

Belize needs more people in the arena.

The future of this country will not be built by complainers. It will be built by people willing to start businesses, mentor young people, create jobs, raise strong families, volunteer in their communities, and take responsibility for making Belize better.

Because life will always be hard.

The question is not whether life is hard.

The question is which hard you choose.

Choose the hard of building a business rather than complaining about one.

Choose the hard of strengthening your marriage rather than giving up on it.

Choose the hard of raising responsible children rather than leaving it to society.

Choose the hard of taking risks rather than watching others take them.

Most importantly, choose the hard of getting in the arena.

Because Belize does not need more spectators.

Belize needs builders.
