By Zoila Palma:  The Nurses Association of Belize (NAB) joins the Belize Medical and Dental Association, the healthcare community, and the nation in expressing profound shock and outrage following the violent crime committed against Dr. Bonilla.

“This tragic act is not only an attack on a dedicated healthcare professional but also an assault on the values of safety, peace, compassion, and respect that are fundamental to a just and healthy society. Healthcare workers dedicate their lives to serving others, often placing themselves at the forefront of care in times of vulnerability, crisis, and need. Violence against those who serve our communities is unacceptable and deeply troubling,” the Nurses Association of Belize said.

The Nurses Association of Belize expressed solidarity with Dr. Bonilla, his family, colleagues, and loved ones.

“We share in their grief and support the call for a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation. This tragedy highlights the growing concerns regarding violence and public safety in Belize. Nurses, physicians, and all healthcare professionals should be able to carry out their duties without fear for their personal safety. Likewise, every Belizean deserves the right to live, work, and contribute to society in peace and security,” the association added.

The NAB said that it fully supports the call for national unity against violence.

The Association encourages all nurses and healthcare professionals to participate peacefully and respectfully in initiatives that promote justice, peace, and community safety.

“Our collective voice must send a clear message that violence has no place in our healthcare system, our communities, or our nation.

As healthcare professionals, we are committed not only to healing the physical wounds of our patients but also to advocating for a society where every individual can live free from fear and violence,” NAB expressed.

The NAB is expected to join the “Justice for Dr. Bonilla” rally scheduled for this evening at 5pm in Belmopan.
