By Zoila Palma: Today marks the start of the 2026 Hurricane Season.
“The time to prepare for the season is yesterday, so if you haven’t started, we highly encourage you to do so,” the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) said.
“We would like to remind you of the role of all parts of the national emergency management system. The National Emergency Management Organization Secretariat, the officers at Headquarters and in the District Officers who maintain this system, continue to support readiness activities for the National Emergency Operations Centre and the District Emergency Operations Centres across the country. All ministries of government, the core of the national emergency management system, have continued their preparations and have ensured that plans have been updated,” NEMO added.
NEMO says that municipalities continue their preparations and have been embarking on readiness activities such as drain clearing, public outreach and training. Organizations have been updating their business continuity plans and are ensuring that they are ready for the season. Families continue to update their Family Plans and keeping their loved ones safe. Finally, we urge all Belizeans to continue to maintain their own individual plans.
NEMO added that key partners such as Belize Red Cross have steadily continued their work throughout the year and stand ready to work alongside NEMO and the people of Belize.
“Our international partners have expressed their commitment to the country and their willingness to work in all phases of the disaster cycle. Our regional partner, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), stands ready to support the Caribbean region,” NEMO explained.
The Executive Director of CDEMA states that “Every plan, every training exercise, every action, and every response is driven by our shared commitment to building capacity, strengthening preparedness, and enhancing resilience across our 20 Participating States.”
NEMO urges all Belizeans to continue to work together, through collaboration, coordination, and partnership, toward our goal of a safer and more resilient Belize.
