New documentary showcases Belize as the heart of the Maya world

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize is taking center stage on the international screen, as a new documentary shines a spotlight on the country’s extraordinary ancient Maya heritage.

In History Hit’s documentary “Secrets of the Maya,” historian and presenter Dan Snow travels through the rugged terrain of Belize, described as the crossroads of the ancient Maya world, to uncover the true story of one of history’s most remarkable civilizations. Joining pioneering archaeologists, Snow strips away the popular myths to reveal a sophisticated, urbanised, and interconnected network of independent kingdoms that flourished for more than 3,000 years.

At the heart of the journey is Caracol, a vast ancient metropolis deep in the jungles of western Belize. At its peak around 650 CE, the city sprawled across 200 square kilometres, far larger than modern-day Belize City. The documentary follows archaeologists Drs. Arlen and Diane Chase, who first arrived at the site in the 1980s, when it was completely buried beneath dense jungle. Towering over the excavated core is Caana, or “Sky Place,” a palace-temple complex that, at 141 feet tall, remains the tallest building in Belize to this day.

What makes Caracol so remarkable, the documentary reveals, is its design. Rather than an elite enclave cut off from ordinary people, it was an integrated city where different social classes lived side by side. Even more astonishing is how the Maya sustained a population of more than 100,000 people deep in a jungle far from major rivers. They were master environmental engineers who terraformed the landscape, building thousands of agricultural terraces and recycling waste into fertilizer to create exceptionally fertile soils.

The film also captures a milestone in Mesoamerican archaeology, the discovery of a royal tomb beneath a residential terrace wall, unveiled by Diane Chase after decades of digging. Inside was a life-sized royal death mask crafted from jadeite and shell. Because jade does not occur naturally in Belize, the find points to extensive trade routes reaching into the Motagua River Valley of Guatemala. The tomb’s occupant has been identified as Tikab Chahk, the founding king who established Caracol’s royal dynasty in 331 CE.

For Belizeans, the documentary is a powerful celebration of the country’s deep history and living culture. As the world tunes in, Belize’s ancient wonders, and the people who built them, are getting the global recognition they deserve.
