By Breaking Belize News Staff: Former UDP Chairman Alberto August has publicly praised Acting Minister of Home Affairs Julius Espat, describing his leadership of the Belize Police Department as a positive change.
In a Facebook post, August wrote, “At long last, a breath of fresh air, sober mind and level headed direction at the helm of the Belize Police Department. If it can be done, Julius Espat will get it done.”
August’s endorsement comes after Espat made one of his first major decisions as acting minister by referring August’s cybercrime case to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for an independent review.
The case, filed under the Cybercrime Act, originated from a complaint made by former Minister of Home Affairs Oscar Mira while he was responsible for the police, raising concerns over a potential conflict of interest.
Espat said he believed the matter should be handled independently by the DPP, the constitutional authority responsible for making prosecution decisions, rather than through an internal police process.
He also acknowledged that the way the matter had previously been handled created negative public perceptions. The DPP welcomed the move, describing it as a mature, professional and sensible approach.
Espat assumed the Home Affairs portfolio on an acting basis after Mira took a leave of absence amid controversy surrounding government payments to businesses linked to members of his family.
An audit by the Auditor General is currently underway, while Mira has denied any involvement in awarding contracts or directing payments.
