Nayib Bukele launches official bid for historic third consecutive term as Salvadoran President

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele on Sunday formally launched his bid for what would be a historic third consecutive elected term, registering alongside Vice President Félix Ulloa as pre-candidates in the ruling Nuevas Ideas party’s internal selection process for the country’s 2027 presidential election.

The registration marks the first official step toward securing the party’s nomination and all but confirms Bukele’s intention to seek another mandate after sweeping constitutional reforms opened the door to consecutive presidential re-election.

The announcement was confirmed by Nuevas Ideas through its official channels and was echoed by senior party figures, including San Salvador Centro Mayor Mario Durán, who welcomed Bukele and Ulloa’s registration and declared that the party was preparing for another electoral victory.

While Sunday’s event does not yet make Bukele the official presidential candidate, it represents the formal beginning of his 2027 campaign and is expected to be followed by the party’s internal ratification process before the ticket is registered with El Salvador’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal.

Why is Bukele running again so soon?

The announcement may surprise many observers since Bukele was only re-elected in February 2024 and began his second term in June of that year.

However, constitutional reforms approved by El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly fundamentally changed the country’s electoral calendar. Rather than serving a full five-year term ending in 2029, Bukele’s current term was shortened so that presidential, legislative and municipal elections could eventually be synchronized.

As a result, El Salvador will return to the polls in 2027, when the presidency will transition to a six-year term under the country’s new constitutional framework.

The reforms also removed previous restrictions on consecutive presidential re-election, making Bukele eligible to seek another mandate.

If elected in 2027, Bukele would become the first Salvadoran president in modern democratic history to win three consecutive elected terms.

Seven years of transformation in El Salvador

Bukele first assumed office on June 1, 2019, promising to break the political dominance of the country’s traditional parties and tackle the rampant gang violence that had plagued El Salvador for decades.

His administration’s defining achievement has been a dramatic reduction in violent crime.

Following the declaration of a State of Exception in March 2022, Salvadoran authorities arrested tens of thousands of suspected gang members, dismantling organizations that had long exercised control over entire communities. Once regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous countries, El Salvador now reports some of the lowest homicide rates in the Western Hemisphere.

The security transformation has allowed businesses to reopen in neighborhoods previously dominated by gangs, revived tourism and restored access to many public spaces that had effectively been under criminal control.

Beyond security, Bukele’s government has invested heavily in infrastructure and urban renewal projects, including new highways, schools, hospitals, libraries, tourism initiatives, public parks and waterfront developments. His administration has also modernized the country’s public education and healthcare systems, expanding free public healthcare, investing heavily in the reconstruction and modernization of public schools, broadening access to tuition-free higher education for eligible students, improving public transportation, expanding digital government services and promoting El Salvador internationally as an investment and tourism destination.

In recent days, Bukele released a video highlighting many of his administration’s accomplishments since taking office in 2019, showcasing improvements in public security, infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic development as he prepares for another electoral campaign.

International scrutiny expected

Bukele remains one of the world’s most popular elected leaders, consistently recording approval ratings above 80 percent in domestic polling.

Supporters credit him with achieving what previous governments could not—breaking the power of violent gangs and fundamentally changing daily life for millions of Salvadorans.

Critics, however, argue that the constitutional changes allowing his continued candidacy, combined with the prolonged State of Exception and the concentration of political power, have weakened democratic institutions and constitutional safeguards.

With Sunday’s registration complete, Bukele now begins what is expected to be a closely watched campaign leading up to the 2027 presidential election, one that is likely to draw significant international attention as he seeks an unprecedented third consecutive electoral mandate.
