By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): It is the moment many have been waiting for. The Belize Fisheries Department has confirmed that the lobster fishing season is officially reopening, much to the delight of fishers and seafood fans across the country.
According to a public notice from the Department, under the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation, the Caribbean spiny lobster season will open on July 1, 2026, and run through to February 28, 2027. The season is being opened in line with the Fisheries Resource Act and its Subsidiary Regulations.
The reopening is always a significant occasion in Belize. Lobster is not only a favourite on local plates and a star attraction for visitors, but a vital source of income for the country’s hardworking fishers. Its return marks the start of a busy and important stretch for the fishing industry.
With that in mind, the Department is urging everyone to fish responsibly and stick to the rules that keep the fishery sustainable. Lobsters must have a minimum carapace length of three inches and a minimum tail weight of four ounces. It is against the law to possess soft-shell, or moulting, lobsters, or females carrying eggs, and removing eggs or spawn from a female lobster is also prohibited. In addition, no person or business should be found with filleted or diced lobster tail.
These measures help safeguard lobster populations, ensuring the resource remains plentiful for years to come.
