By Zoila Palma: This week, the Stann Creek Agriculture Department in collaboration with Agro-Processing Unit and Georgetown Technical High School conducted a practical training session focused on the processing of mango jam and pickled jalapeño peppers.
The Ministry noted that this initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen agro-processing skills among students and promote value-added agricultural practices within the district. The hands-on training provided participants with the opportunity to learn essential techniques in food preservation, safety, and product development.
During the session, students were guided through the step-by-step process of transforming fresh mangoes into high-quality mango jam, as well as preparing and preserving jalapeño peppers through pickling. Emphasis was placed on proper handling, hygiene standards, and the importance of adding value to locally produced crops.
Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries highlighted the importance of Agro-processing as a means to reduce post-harvest losses, increase income opportunities, and support sustainable agriculture.
The Agro-Processing Unit also demonstrated best practices and shared technical knowledge to ensure the production of safe and marketable food products.
“The collaboration between Georgetown Technical High School and the Agriculture Department underscores a shared commitment to building practical skills, fostering innovation, and encouraging youth involvement in agriculture and agribusiness,” the Ministry said.
Students expressed enthusiasm for the training, noting that the experience not only enhanced their technical knowledge but also inspired interest in future entrepreneurial ventures within the Agro-processing sector.
