By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Football fever is set to hit Cowpen this Saturday, November 22, as two government ministers trade their offices for the pitch in a special charity clash.
At 9:00 am, Osmond Martinez, Minister of Economic Transformation, and Rodwell Ferguson, the new Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and New Growth Industries, will lead the action in a friendly match designed to raise funds for community projects.
Both ministers bring personal ties to the sport. Martinez once competed at the highest level of Belizean football, representing Boca FC of Bella Vista in the 2006 Concacaf Central American Cup, where the Belizean side faced regional giants like Olimpia of Honduras, Costa Rica’s Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, and Alianza FC of El Salvador. Ferguson, meanwhile, is also remembered for his own competitive playing days in his home village of Pomona in southern Belize, making Saturday’s match a nostalgic return to the field for both leaders.
They will be joined by several well‑known personalities from across the south, ensuring plenty of excitement and star appeal for fans.
Organizers say the event is about more than sport—it’s about unity, fun, and giving back to the village. Residents are encouraged to show up, support the cause, and enjoy a morning of football with their leaders.
Cowpen, the countdown is on—the ministers are ready to play.
