By Zoila Palma: Belizean consumers are feeling the pinch as meat prices rise across the board.
According to the January 2026 report from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), beef steak jumped from $9.90 per pound in January 2025 to $10.71 in January 2026, an increase of 8.2%, while stew pork saw the steepest hike, soaring 17.8% to $8.21 per pound.
Ground beef remained steady at $7.74 per pound, while whole chicken rose slightly to $3.25 per pound, a 2% increase.
Turkey prices climbed from $5.54 to $5.76 per pound (4.1% increase), and chicken cuts varied, with chicken breasts rising modestly to $4.76 per pound (1% increase) while chicken cuts overall slightly decreased by 1.4%.
Poultry remains the most accessible protein source for Belizean families, offering some relief as pork and beef prices climb more sharply.
