By Zoila Palma: Today, Mayor Bernard Wagner, in his capacity as Chair of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF), is leading a delegation at CHOGM 2026 in Antigua and Barbuda, championing the interests of local governments across the Commonwealth’s 56 member states.
Building on his recent participation in the Wilton Park Dialogue on Sustainable Urbanisation in Guyana, Mayor Wagner continues to advocate for stronger local governance, sustainable urban development and greater investment in resilient infrastructure.
At the business forum held on November 2, Mayor Wagner contributed to a high-level roundtable discussion on building resilient, smart and sustainable cities, highlighting the importance of integrating emerging technologies, innovative financing and inclusive urban planning into the future of Commonwealth cities.
Mayor Wagner also highlighted practical initiatives, including the Yabra Flood Pumping Station, the eRide electric mobility programme and the Floating Pavilion, demonstrating how local innovation can strengthen climate resilience, modernise urban infrastructure and improve quality of life.
“His intervention reinforced a central message; Commonwealth cities must be empowered with the resources, partnerships and autonomy to transform ambitious development goals into practical solutions for their communities,” the Belize City council said.
As Chair of the CLGF, Mayor Wagner continues to position Belize City at the forefront of Commonwealth discussions, ensuring that the voices and priorities of local governments are represented at the highest levels
