By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 50-year-old Belize City man was remanded to prison on Monday after being unable to post bail on a theft charge involving his daughter’s clothing, despite claiming that a woman he met while drinking was responsible for the missing items.
Kirk Errol Pitts, a resident of Antelope Street Extension, appeared unrepresented before a Magistrate in Belize City, where he was accused of stealing clothing belonging to his daughter on October 30, 2026.
The missing items reportedly included two pairs of blue jeans and a white blouse.
Pitts initially pleaded not guilty but attempted to explain that the charge resulted from a misunderstanding between him and his daughter.
According to Pitts, he met a woman while drinking at a Chinese shop and eventually invited her to his home. He claimed that while he was using the bathroom, the woman stole some of his daughter’s clothing without his knowledge.
Pitts told the court that he had no one to assist him with bail because his mother and brother had died. He also expressed concern that going to prison would cause him to lose his job.
At one point, Pitts indicated that he wanted to plead guilty, apparently believing it would help him avoid being remanded. However, the Magistrate refused to accept a guilty plea because his explanation continued to deny responsibility for the alleged theft.
With no objection from the prosecution, Pitts was offered bail of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount. However, he was also required to settle an outstanding court fine of $55 before securing his release.
Pitts requested bail on his own recognizance, but that request was denied.
Unable to pay the outstanding fine or secure a surety, Pitts was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until he can meet the conditions for his release.
His next court appearance is scheduled for January 2027.
