Late-night blaze destroys building in Placencia Village

By Horace Palacio: A fire erupted on Saturday night, January 20, at approximately 9:20 PM, behind the residence of Carl Wallen in Placencia Village, sparking an immediate response from authorities.

The Placencia Fire Department, alongside the Placencia Police, arrived at the scene at 9:23 PM to confront a blazing inferno. They were confronted with a small three-story wooden structure, measuring 10×10 feet, fully engulfed in flames.

Inside the building at the time of the fire was 22-year-old Amir Palma, a Belizean watchman residing in the structure. Mr. Palma recounted being awakened by the noise, only to find the building ablaze. In a fortunate turn of events, he escaped unharmed and promptly alerted the building’s owner, Carl Wallen. Mr. Wallen, 38, is a Belizean driver and boat captain.

The police and firefighters conducted a thorough examination of the fire scene. Adding to the investigation’s complexity, they discovered that the building, primarily used for bike repairs and storage, lacked both electricity and insurance.
