International News: Guyanese man arrested at JFK Airport with cocaine hidden in frozen shrimp

By Horace Palacio: According to a report by the New York Post, in a major drug interception at JFK Airport, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers apprehended a 22-year-old man from Guyana who was attempting to smuggle 40 pounds of cocaine. The narcotics were ingeniously concealed within frozen shrimp packages.

The suspect, identified as Zacharie Scott, was detained following a routine check after his arrival on American Airlines Flight 2694 from Guyana. Scott underwent a secondary screening process where he confirmed ownership of two suitcases that appeared to be packed with frozen jumbo shrimp.

Upon closer examination, customs officers discovered the shrimp packages were a cover for “brick-shaped objects” containing cocaine. Scott admitted to the officers that he had agreed to transport the narcotics for a payment between $5,000 and $6,000.

This seizure at JFK Airport, a major gateway in the USA, underscores the complex and evolving tactics employed by drug traffickers to evade detection. The operation highlights the persistent challenges that U.S. border protection agencies face in their efforts to stem the tide of illegal narcotics entering the country.

If convicted, Scott faces a severe sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
