By Zoila Palma: Taiwan’s Defence Minister Wellington Koo has described recent Chinese Coast Guard patrols in waters east of Taiwan as a “provocative act,” saying the military will work closely with the island’s Coast Guard to monitor and respond to the situation.
The patrols came after Chinese authorities launched what state media called a “special maritime traffic law-enforcement operation” in waters east of Taiwan, Reuters report.
China’s action followed announcements by Japan and the Philippines that they would begin formal talks on delimiting their maritime boundaries, a move Beijing viewed as involving waters off Taiwan. In response to the Chinese patrols, Taiwan’s Coast Guard dispatched its own vessels to warn away the ships and later reported that the Chinese vessels had been expelled from restricted waters.
Speaking in parliament, Koo accused China of attempting to assert control over waters east of Taiwan and characterized the move as both a provocation and an act of cognitive warfare.
