By Horace Palacio: As Belize approaches the general elections on March 12, the People’s United Party (PUP) stands on the brink of securing another term in government. With uncontested victories in Fort George and Pickstock, the ruling party now needs only 14 more seats to retain power.
Henry Charles Usher and Anthony Mahler were declared winners after their United Democratic Party (UDP) opponents failed to submit nominations. The absence of opposition candidates in these key Belize City constituencies has fueled criticism regarding the state of democracy in Belize, with many questioning the UDP’s preparedness and internal cohesion.
Political observers have expressed concerns that a weakened opposition could limit democratic accountability. “A healthy democracy requires competitive elections,” stated one political analyst. “When voters have no choice, it undermines public confidence in the system and raises questions about the future of political engagement in Belize.”
While PUP supporters celebrated the uncontested victories, party leaders acknowledged the broader implications. “This is a significant moment, but democracy thrives when there is healthy competition,” said a PUP spokesperson. “We remain focused on earning the trust of voters across the remaining constituencies.”
With only 14 seats needed to secure a parliamentary majority, the PUP is well-positioned to maintain control of the government. However, the lack of opposition candidates in key divisions has cast a shadow over the electoral process, highlighting the need for a stronger and more organized opposition to ensure balanced governance in Belize.
