By Zoila Palma: Tsunami waves have reached the U.S. West Coast following a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday morning.
The quake, one of the most powerful ever recorded in the region, triggered tsunami alerts across the Pacific, prompting evacuations in several countries, BBC reports.
In California, a wave measuring 1.09 meters (3.6 feet) was recorded in Crescent City, while waves also hit parts of Hawaii and Japan.
The earthquake occurred at approximately 11:25 a.m. local time near Kamchatka and caused significant disruption.
Russian authorities evacuated the coastal town of Severo-Kurilsk after 4-meter (13-foot) waves flooded the port and damaged a fish processing facility.
Japan, which initially urged nearly two million people to evacuate, has since downgraded its tsunami warnings, though advisories remain in place.
Similar downgrades have occurred in Russia, Hawaii, and the Philippines, though alerts persist in areas as far apart as Colombia, New Zealand, and parts of French Polynesia.
The impact has been deeply felt across the Pacific.
In Hawaii, residents and tourists described the experience as “nerve-wracking,” with some opting to sleep in vehicles for safety.
In Japan, sirens woke thousands along the Pacific coast in the early hours.
Climate experts continue to monitor wave activity and warn coastal populations to remain cautious.
