International News: US–Iran talks stall as nuclear dispute deepens and pressure builds

By Zoila Palma:  Negotiations between the United States and Iran failed to deliver a breakthrough in Islamabad on Saturday, but officials on both sides say the talks are not over.

Instead, the discussions have clarified the widening gap between Washington and Tehran, particularly over Iran’s nuclear program, even as diplomatic channels remain open, CNN reports.

According to sources familiar with the talks, U.S. negotiators proposed a 20-year pause on Iran’s uranium enrichment program, while Iran countered with a five-year suspension plan.

U.S. officials rejected the shorter timeline, leaving the central disagreement unresolved. Despite the setback, officials described the session as part of a longer negotiating process rather than a final collapse.

U.S. President Donald Trump remains open to resuming in-person talks if he believes Iran is prepared to meet Washington’s conditions. Officials are also discussing a possible second meeting with Iranian representatives before the current ceasefire period expires on April 21, though plans remain preliminary and no final decision has been made on timing or location.

Diplomatic efforts are continuing behind the scenes, with regional mediators including Turkey, Egypt, Oman, and Pakistan helping facilitate discussions.

Saturday’s 21-hour meeting in Islamabad followed weeks of preparation and involved multiple possible venues, including Geneva, Vienna, and Istanbul, before Pakistan was chosen.

A regional source said further rounds of talks remain possible as mediators work to bridge differences.
