By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is taking a firmer stance against U.S. President Donald Trump, protesting the deaths of Mexican migrants in U.S. immigration custody while challenging Washington’s policies toward Cuba.
The shift marks a stronger tone from the Mexican leader after more than a year of measured responses to U.S. pressure, AP reports.
The latest tensions follow the death of a 49-year-old Mexican citizen in a detention center run by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Louisiana, the 15th such death in a little over a year.
Mexico’s government called the deaths “unacceptable” and said detention conditions are incompatible with human rights standards.
“We are going to defend Mexicans at every level,” Sheinbaum said, emphasizing that many detained migrants have committed no crime beyond lacking documentation. Her government is also backing legal action in U.S. courts over alleged poor conditions, as criticism of U.S. immigration enforcement grows domestically.
Despite the sharper rhetoric, Sheinbaum has largely maintained what she calls a “cool head” in dealing with Trump, balancing cooperation with assertions of Mexico’s sovereignty.
Her administration has increased pressure on criminal cartels and strengthened trade ties ahead of renegotiations of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, while navigating repeated criticism from Trump.
Relations have been further strained over Cuba, a longstanding ally of Mexico.
Sheinbaum has opposed U.S. measures including an energy blockade on the island, calling them “unjust” and accusing Washington of “suffocating” Cubans. Although Mexico paused some oil shipments after U.S. threats, Sheinbaum insisted the country has the right to provide fuel and humanitarian aid, and has continued support efforts.
