By Zoila Palma: Robert F. Kennedy Jr., U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary, arrived in West Texas following the death of a school-aged child from measles—marking the second such fatality in the state linked to the ongoing outbreak. Kennedy expressed his intention to console the families affected by the tragedy.
As of Friday, Texas had reported 481 cases related to the outbreak, which is primarily affecting unvaccinated individuals, with nearly 70% of cases in children and teens, CNN reports.
Texas health officials, alongside teams from the CDC, are working to control the spread.
Kennedy emphasized that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is the most effective way to prevent measles.
He added that the deceased child, who was unvaccinated, had no underlying health conditions.
The outbreak, which has affected Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and possibly Kansas, has led to at least 569 cases. Experts warn of rising hospitalizations, particularly among young children.
Senator Bill Cassidy called for stronger health leadership, urging officials to publicly support vaccination to prevent further deaths.
Meanwhile, Kennedy’s stance on vaccines has drawn criticism, with some health experts blaming misinformation for the resurgence of measles.
