By Zoila Palma: The Belize Fisheries Department held a successful three-day workshop in Belize City from March 31 to April 2, focused on harmonizing data collection and sharing for better fisheries management.
Participants discussed strategies for data on spiny lobster, finfish, and queen conch, as well as other fisheries like sea cucumber, shark, and stone crab.
Key sessions covered data management, legal frameworks, and national reporting systems. A major focus was on modern data strategies, including the SMART system, to improve national reporting and collaborative data sharing.
The workshop also addressed data gaps, survey design, and research permit frameworks, with the goal of establishing a unified approach to fisheries data management.
This event, funded by the Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future, aimed to strengthen governance and monitoring of Belize’s coastal and marine resources.
The Fisheries Department thanked all contributors for their valuable participation in advancing sustainable fisheries management.
