By Zoila Palma: At least 24 people have been killed, including four police officers, following two separate violent attacks in Honduras on Thursday, BBC reports.
In the first incident, at least 19 workers were shot and killed at a ranch in northern Honduras, in what officials described as one of the deadliest attacks in the area in recent months.
A second shooting took place in the coastal town of Omoa, near the border with Guatemala, where at least four police officers and one civilian were killed, according to National Police spokesperson Edgardo Barahona.
Following the attacks, the Honduras National Police announced it would carry out “direct intervention” operations in both affected areas as investigations continue.
At this time, police said no motive has yet been confirmed for the ranch attack in the north, while the officers killed in Omoa were reportedly part of an anti-gang operation traveling from the capital Tegucigalpa.
No arrests have been made, and officials say the overall death toll may still be adjusted as the situation develops.
